Hemet Unified’s Nutrition Services Department and SAFE Expanded Learning Program teamed up to provide a fun, and delicious, learning activity for HUSD families. Families picking up meal boxes for their students may have noticed additional ingredients and directions to make tacos. Normally meal boxes only contain breakfast, snack, and lunch items, but with the collaboration between Nutrition and SAFE, the staff was able to add a dinner item as well!
In addition to the ingredients and written directions in the meal box, families were able to visit the SAFE After School website to watch a video of SAFE employee Darrel Smith providing step-by-step instructions. The 33-minute video also included cooking tips for students and families.
The idea to include this additional meal was to provide an activity that brought families together. As you may be aware, cooking is a great way to teach math, reading comprehension, and learn a valuable life skill. It was also important to HUSD staff to change things up from the previous nine months of providing meal boxes.
Since meal distribution, every Wednesday, staff have been receiving messages, pictures, and videos of students enjoying their creations. We are so happy to have provided a fun, and delicious, activity to our families. Staff is hoping to continue this idea through February and maybe even longer!
